Princess Diana’s wedding dress holds an iconic weight in the history of bridal dresses. It featured a 25-foot train and an assumed 10,000 pearls, designed and made by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, a former husband and wife duo. But that wasn’t the only dress the late princess had in preparation for her wedding day.
She actually had a backup, and why wouldn’t she? She needed to be prepared in every way possible for her big day. Sketches of the backup dress were previously released, but now, an exclusive photo of the never-before-seen dress has also been released.
Elizabeth shared a photo of the backup wedding dress with Hello! magazine. In the photo, a woman is seen working on the dress, which is laid out on a table.
“The spare wedding gown was made just in case the secret of the real dress ever got out,” the designer shared. “Fortunately, it was never used. The dress was made in pale ivory silk taffeta with embroidered scalloped details on the hem and sleeves. Tiny pearls were sewn on the bodice.”
“People always ask you what it was like,” she continued. “It was similar in certain respects and both had the big skirt, but everything else was different.” The spare dress was never tried on by Princess Diana, and the design was never fully finished. To this day, Elizabeth is unsure of its whereabouts. “I don’t know where it went. It just disappeared.”
