A Crushing Final Puzzle on Wheel of Fortune Leaves a Deserving Contestant Just Two Letters Away from Victory, Proving How Even the Strongest Performances Can Unravel in Seconds When an Unexpected Phrase Turns Triumph Into One of the Show’s Most Talked-About Near Misses Ever

‘Wheel of Fortune’ Player Misses Out On Car After Failing To Solve This ‘Evil’ Puzzle

A heartbreaking moment on “Wheel of Fortune” is igniting outrage among fans after a Massachusetts mom came agonizingly close to winning a brand-new car — only to lose it on what viewers are calling one of the most “evil” puzzles the show has seen in years.

Jess Graham of Brockton, Massachusetts, delivered a dominant performance during the January 26 episode, cruising through most of the game and positioning herself as the clear frontrunner heading into the Bonus Round. But in the final seconds, a tricky phrase — and just two missing letters — stood between her and the keys to a new vehicle.

Graham, a lifelong skier from a family deeply rooted in the sport, balanced competitive focus with warmth, sharing that she’s also a wife and mother of three. From the opening moments of the episode, it was clear she came to play. She swept both toss-up puzzles, immediately locking in $3,000 and setting the tone for the night.

Her opponents included Rocky Brown of Chicago, who revealed he’s training to compete on the reality series “Survivor,” and Duane Chapman from Lubbock, Texas, a devoted basketball fan. Brown made a strong early push by calling out multiple correct letters in the first main puzzle, but a single incorrect guess abruptly ended his run. Chapman seized the opportunity, solving “High School Yearbook Photo” and putting his first $1,000 on the board.

Graham soon widened the gap. She nailed the “Before & After” puzzle, correctly identifying “Sparkling Water Taxi,” which earned her over $10,000 in one shot. Moments later, she landed on the high-value “Year of Fun” wedge and confidently solved the Prize Puzzle, “Happy Smiling Faces,” securing a vacation to Finland and pushing her total past $22,000.

The momentum continued during the Triple Toss-Ups. Graham answered two of the three “Song Lyrics” puzzles, adding another $4,000 to her total. Chapman closed out the main game by solving “Thermal Underwear,” finishing with $8,600, while Brown exited with $2,000.

By the end of regulation play, Graham stood tall as the night’s top earner with $26,544 and a ticket to the Bonus Round.

Choosing “Phrase” as her final category, she was joined on stage by her husband, Andy, who watched anxiously as the puzzle board filled in. After receiving the standard letters — R, S, T, L, N, and E — Graham selected C, G, H, and O. The board revealed a maddening setup: “THE_ GOT O_T_O_E_.”

With the clock ticking down, Graham fired off multiple educated guesses, including “They Got Outvoted” and “They Got Outmoved.” She made one last attempt just before time expired — but the answer narrowly escaped her. The correct solution was “They Got Outfoxed.”

Host Ryan Seacrest acknowledged the difficulty of the final puzzle before opening the envelope to reveal the lost prize: a Ford vehicle.

Fans erupted online almost immediately.

Viewers flooded YouTube and social media with criticism, slamming the phrase as obscure, outdated, and unfair. Some compared it to impossible Hangman choices, while others joked that the show was digging phrases out of the 19th century. Several commenters insisted they had never heard the expression used in real life.

Despite the disappointment, Graham walked away with a sizable cash prize and an international vacation — but for many fans, the night will be remembered for what didn’t happen.

For viewers at home, it was a painful reminder that on “Wheel of Fortune,” even a near-perfect game can end with a brutal twist — and sometimes, the puzzle really does outfox everyone
